Reflection 14

Today the leader, Sherwin is not here so we do not know how is the process of the slides but what we completed now is the poster which is our product although some pictures is still needed to make it more perfect. We had also listen to some other groups presentation and will take some necessary parts to make our slides better. This is way, the groups can all try to make their project more perfect as we can give tips in making their project a better one and they will help us by letting us see some points that we had never seen. I like this way of helping each other, its a shame that our leader, Sherwin, had missed class today.

Reflection 13

Today there is no teacher for my group. Although there is no teacher we did our best to organize ourselves and did what we left to do. We left the posters some parts of the slides and also the video that need to to be taken. We left only a few weeks to our presentation and will try our best to finish what we left before the presentation as we still need to practice on how we will present our slides and products.

How to recycle in school

Here are some tips on how to recycle in school.
1) Reuse paper as raft paper.
2) Do not throw paper into the class bin and collect them in a stack then give it to the recycling centre. You may get some $$$.
3) Do not mix paper cups with waste food, segregate them into separate parts.

How to fold a packet drink.
1) Pull out the straw.
2) Pull out both ends and squash them flat.

Recycle

Recycling involves processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution and water pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".

Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, wood, timber, cloths etc. Although similar in effect, the composting or other reuse of biodegradable waste – such as food or garden waste – is not typically considered recycling. Materials to be recycled are either brought to a collection center or picked up from the curbside, then sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials bound for manufacturing.

In a strict sense, recycling of a material would produce a fresh supply of the same material, for example used office paper to more office paper, or used foamed polystyrene to more polystyrene. However, this is often difficult or too expensive (compared with producing the same product from raw materials or other sources), so "recycling" of many products or materials involves their reuse in producing different materials instead. Another form of recycling is the salvage of certain materials from complex products, either due to their intrinsic value, or due to their hazardous nature.

Critics dispute the net economic and environmental benefits of recycling over its costs, and suggest that proponents of recycling often make matters worse and suffer from confirmation bias. Specifically, critics argue that the costs and energy used in collection and transportation detract from the costs and energy saved in the production process; also that the jobs produced by the recycling industry can be a poor trade for the jobs lost in logging, mining, and other industries associated with virgin production; and that materials such as paper pulp can only be recycled a few times before material degradation prevents further recycling. Proponents of recycling dispute each of these claims, and the validity of arguments from both sides has led to enduring controversy.

Our Progress

We have already done all the research work and we just left in designing the poster. Wei Xuan is in charge of doing the poster and for the design, Wei Xuan will just decide on how to draw the poster.

Recyclemania

In America there is a competition called the recyclemania that motivates the students from colleges and universities to recycle. Items such as Boxboard / Chipboard, Catalogs / Junk mail / Magazines / Phone books,Hard and softbound books, Newspaper, Office Paper (all colors) are in the category of paper. Items such as Aluminum / Steel cans, Glass bottles and jars are in the category of cans and bottles. This competition is welcome by lots of countries now and there is a lot of participants in every competition. This competition can teach students the importance of recycling, teamwork and also they might start to have a habit of recycling. We could put this type of competition in school between each level or each class to motivate the pupils from recycling.

By doing this it will help in reaching in our project goal which was to make the school a cleaner place to study in.

No Grace lesson

There isn't any GRACE lesson for the next two week because of exam. We will stop our work temporarily and continue after the exam.

Week 12th Reflection

The first 10 minutes of the Grace lesson was in chaos as we did not know what to do and no teacher came. Many made noise and wreaked havoc in that situation. It was then when Ms Phan came in. We thought that she was our Grace teacher at first but actually, she is just here to give the notes. Then, it was followed by Mr Wong. Thinking that he was here to give out history notes too, we didn't thought that he would be our Grace teacher. When he made his stand that he is the history teacher, I cheered loudly in my heart as he is our fun History teacher and he would strive his best to teach us!

We were told to concentrate only on the poster as it is the most important product.

Reflection 12

This week we are finally focusing on the poster and yet sherwin did not take the photos thats needed and we can only draw out the design we wanted, then when the photos are taken we will be making the poster and it will be posted around canteen and the school. I hope we could work hard to finish the posters fast.

Reflection 12

This week we had our 12th GRACE lesson and I found out that my group did not do anything when i was not around. This week our teacher is Mr Wong and he gave us fresh ideas. We will try to finish our poster by this week.
Wei Xuan and Jun Jie is incharge of making and designing the poster in an A4 then Mr Wong will help us enlarge into A3 size.
Wei yi is in charge of researching on how we are able to recycle Milo packets and what will happen to them after they are recycled.
I will be in charge of taking pictures and announce to the whole school in the morning assembly on what we are doing.

Week 11 reflection

This lesson, Ms Tan was not here and we had a new teacher replacing her. The teacher did not know our progress therefore, couldn't give us much information on what should we do however, he really did tried his best and did what he could. Thanks! I guess he would need some time to adapt to the environment, hahaha.

Weiyi is still in charge of the informations however, he have not gave it to me yet. I'm in charge of project. (Gah, I'm forced) Junjie's in charge of _____?! (Sorry, I don't know what you're in charge of, hehes)

Anyway, I think our group progress is quite slow and we needa buck up and pull up our socks.

This week i did not go for the 11th GRACE lesson because I had cca and was released early from class. I do not know what happened during the lesson and just like what Jun Jie said on the reflection the group was chaotic (i can imagine). Reflection 11

This week our teacher Ms Tan is not here, a relief teacher is sent to be helping us instead. Our leader Sherwin is also not around due to his CCA, this cause a bit of chaos between the members because everything is with the leader and he is not around when our lesson started. We managed to plan a bit one our products which is the posters we are making to tell every marist the importance of keeping the school clean. I hope we could complete our poster as soon as possible, because their is lots of information that needs to be put in.

Week 10 reflection.

For this weeks lesson, our powerpoint was presented to the teacher however, it lacks information and media resources. Weiyi is in charge of the informations and resources whereas, I am still in charge of the survey results. My survey results were already collated however, I left it at my house desktop and not in my mac therefore, I couldn't send it to my group leader. The lesson is getting more and more interesting as every week go by as I learnt more information and knowledge about recycling. :)

We have done our powerpoint slides and are improving it. Such as putting more pictures so that the audience will be able to see what we are talking abount. We also need to add in the results od the survey. Week 10 reflection

This week we had our 10th GRACE lesson and we presented our powerpoint to our teacher. She said that we needed more pictures and more specific in certain areas. We also decided that we would start on the poster that we are suppose to do. Our poster will have pictures of the dirty Maris Stella (which everyone thinks so based on the survey results), facts about global warming and how to help to recycle more for the school.
Wei Xuan will do the drawing and sketches for the posters as he is good in art
Wei Yi and i will be searching more about the facts of global warming.
Ju Jie will collate the survey results and put it into a graph and if possible, help Wei Xuan in his work

Our aim for these posters is to be done within 2 weeks done from now.

Reflection 10

We had done our powerpoint slides and now it need too be improved on. Our power point need to have more pictures in it so that our audience can see how dirty the canteen is so that they will know how dirty the canteen is and thats why we should keep it clean. We also need to add in the data of the survey and some information on how to recycle. The powerpoint is now in the leaders hand which he says he will be improving it, Weiyi will be searching for informations and Weixuan as well as myself will be doing the posters.

The surveys for the student is done. However, we haven't collate all of them yet. I am suppose to collate and make graph whereas, Weiyi is in charge of the Data & Information while Sherwin & Junjie is in charge of the Powerpoint. By the next lesson, everything must be done as our teacher is going on maternity leave. I believe all of us can do it and come up with a product. :)

Hopefully, we could get everyone to recycle and know more about global warming and how to stop it with the product.

Reflection 9

This week we allocated our result for the students survey and is proceeding to the staff surveys. We make the staff surveys as easy as possible as our target is teachers and school cleaners. We had to allocate all the result before Monday for the powerpoint slides that we need to show the teacher and if its good we will make it into posters as our product. I hope that everyone does their jobs and students will start to love the environments more after this project.

Week 9 reflection

This week we had our 9th GRACE lesson and i found out that our group was lagging behind. Therefore, we decided to speed up on what we are suppose to do. We decided to do the poster but before that, we will make a powerpoint and present it to the teacher. What our powerpoint contain will be the data from the survey for students and staff, facts about the litter in Maris Stella, how to recycle.

Week 8 reflection.

This week is super hectic for my group as we are suppose to come up with a product already.

We splitted the group into half to do the survey.

Me(26) & Sherwin(28) is doing the survey for students while,

Junjie(25) & Weiyi(29) is doing the survey for staffs.

(The staff survey is not done by yet them. Hopefully, it could be done in a week's time.)

Our group leader has already sent the survey for students via studywiz. However, there were not many response and minimal information was collected.

(He has decided to print the survey and let people do it through the hard-copy)

This week, I am suppose to research on how to recycle.

The following information below is what I've researched.

1) Determine what categories of items is suitable for recycling.

(My group has chosen paper and plastic.) Paper- Packet drinks; Plastic- Utensils.

2)Designate a seperate location for each category.

(We are going to create the recycling bins after we've done the poster.)

3) While recycling, fold & compress the air inside the object so as to save space and to save the usage of rubbish bags as rubbish bags are expensive and not environmental-friendly.

I wish that we could come up with a product by this Sunday so as to be able to continue on this project sucessfully without any flaws. :)

Changes about the survey

Due to small response from the survey when sending via studywiz. I decided to change the method of asking people to do survey. Instead of the old method. I will print out one copy of the student and ask the people taking the survey to write down their results in a piece of foolscap. Then i will tally up the results and make a final presentation

Week 8 Reflection

This week our teacher guided us through our work and find out that our progress is very slow, she helped us by giving us some tips to improve on our project. We decided that we will make some posters to tell the students the importance of recycling and put pictures of the canteen before and after use. Then we might encourage the pupils to start recycling and will take pictures of the canteen after the posters has been put on to compare the difference. We also decided to put two recycle bins, one for plastic like plastic utensils and the other for paper like paper cups and packet drinks. We will put on the instructions on how to fold the packet drinks in order to make more spaces for the plastic bags to hold them, like this we save more plastic bags and its environmental friendly as well.

This week we had our 8th GRACE lesson and our teacher guided us on how to make notice board for our project. We have also finished the survey for the students but the survey for staff is still pending. We plan to get all the data from the survey for students by next lesson. Jun Jie will be responsible for taking pictures for the rubbish in the canteen. Wei yi, Wei xuan and me will be responsible for the making of the notice board. We plan to add in facts about recycling and litter and add in pictures taken by Jun Jie.

Reflection 7

Today our teacher had looked at our survey questions and help us improved on it, I still need to take pictures of the school litter problems, i choose to take in the canteen as this is one of the place where most people goes to, I will take pictures before school, during recess, after school and at about 3pm to compare the school canteen litter problems. Our survey has loopholes all over and we must correct it one by one to make it more understandable for other people do the survey. We had surveys for the school staffs and also students, we gave the staff hard-copy of the survey to do and for the students, the soft-copy which will sent them via the studywiz. I hope that everyone in the school could take our survey seriously.

Week 7 reflection

This week we had our 7th GRACE lesson and our teacher told us to finish up the survey questions. We have to do the survey questions for the staff and the students. We have divided that we would do and i will do the first 10 questions for the staff. Wei Xuan will do the last 10 questions of the GRACE survey questions. Wei yi will do the first 10 questions of the survey questions for students. While Jun jie will do the last 10 questions of the survey for the students. WE plan to finish up the survey questions by tomorrow and hopefully get the results if the survey before the next lesson

Week 6 reflection

This week we had our 6th GRACE lesson. We have decided that we will use only multiple choice questions for the survey as it is easier for people as well as less time consuming. Sherwin and I will think of how to make and design the notice board we were planning to make. weixuan will finish the survey questions and junjie will take the pictures

Wk 6; Reflection :D

This week lesson was on survey question. My duty was to write out the questions and I've already did it however, Miss Tan told me to group the questions. Also, I could also have some multiple choice questions as majority of the people out there would choose multiple choice to open ended questions. Although multiple choice are easier, but, there is still a need for open-ended questions as we need to know the people's opinion and thoughts.

We are also suppose to ask Mr Kwok and the school cleaners about some questions! It is absolutely tough! What if they scold us? What if we cannot find them? Ha, am I being too paranoid? :p

Ms Tan gave us some advice too though. She told us that there is a different school cleaner on every different levels of the school. Hope we can find them asap! :D

Anyways, I think everything would be done in around a month. Hope everything works out successfully. Hope everyone would take their time and effort to do their survey. (:

Week 6 reflection

This week we had our 6th GRACE lesson. Ms Tan just gave us even more advise on how to do the project. We have decided that our survey questions will al be multiple choice questions. We chose it to be multiple choice as people prefer to choose answers than think of answers. To get the full effect of the survey, we decided to make the students life easier. Wei yi and i will help to brainstorm about the notice board that we decided to make. Jun Jie have taken the picture of the canteen rubbish before school and during recess, but he will be taking even more pictures after and before school.

Reflection 6

Today we have done what we are suppose to do for the previous weeks, and out teacher had seen our progress as well as give us some tips on our work. We are suppose to improve our works for the next few weeks as well as interview peoples about our school problems. My job for the time being is to take pictures after the school in the canteen to see the school littering problems. I will take pictures before school, after recess, after school and also at about 3pm in the afternoon to compare the litter problems. I also need to take pictures in the rubbish bins to see how we can separate the litters in the bins to help the school litter problems.

This week we had split ourselves into different roles, weixuan is making the survey forms needed while weiyi do the worksheets and as for me, i am taking pictures of the litter problem in the school and as for our leader, sherwin, he will be helping us out in our jobs and complete those works that we could not finish to do. This week we had our 5th GRACE lesson and our group have decided to split the jobs that we have to do among us. Wei xuan shall do the survey questions for the students and teacher to do. As we want to make a comparison, Jun Jie shall take the pictures of rubbish in class before and after. Wei yi shall do all the GRACE worksheets starting from week 1. I will be helping them and when they couldn't finish i will help them. All of us are also going to ask the school janitors questions regarding about the school's littering.

Week 4 reflection

This week we have finished our proposal for our plan. We intend to interview some of the staff to find out some things such as how many garbage bags the school uses each day, and how many dustbins there are in the whole school. We also need to find ideas of hwo to design posters to encourage the students to use the dustbins instead of just throwing it on the floor. I hope that this situation can be resolved soon.

For this week's lesson, Ms Tan told us many informations about recycling again. She also told us to research on many countries regarding recycling. Our group leader, Sherwin also made up a group proposal for us. I think the group proposal helps alot as it make our work more organised.

I researched on the topic of recycling and found out that Taiwan starts teaching children recycling since young. It's great seeing students getting involved in recycling at such an early age. It's even better seeing that their country's government is taking the lead and providing them with a system that allows and encourages them to recycle everything. It is even better seeing them being so enthusiastic and taking pride in their work. I think that we should also provide opportunities for all our students in Maris Stella and even island-wide, in Singapore to teach students about recycling and environmental issues. We should get everyone to start doing this greenjobs and make Singapore a clean and green country.

I've also researched world-wide famous for recycling country, Japan. They uses different signs to differentiate the material of the object to recycle and I think that this would make life easier for all of us. Maybe, we could also make bottles with different signs imprinted on them to make life easier for all of us and make us think that recycling is not a chore. Maybe, we could even make it a hobby for everyone!

Our group are still finding time to interview the school admin-workers as our schedule clash and we find it hard to find the school admin-workers as many of them are scattered all around the school. Also, some of them speaks different language from us and it is difficult to communicate with them. However, this would be settled soon :D

This week we had finished our proposal for our plan and we plan out some question that will both help us improve our work as well as to see of our plan will work. We must do some interviews as well as some searchings in order to find them out but the timings is very difficult to plan because everyone has their tuitions as well as life-science and some outdoor learnings so the planning for the interview might be postponed to the next week in order to carry out. We also need to think out of various ways to encourage students to throw their rubbish into the bins and some might not work so this is quiet a problem but others are doing quiet fine.

Week 3 Reflection

This week lesson was rather interesting as Ms. Tan helped us in our project. As a result, we managed to do quite alot.

To improve Maris Stella's littering problem, I believe we should publicise about it such as We putting posters around the school or announcing about littering problems during assembly to decrease the workload of the cleaners.

I hope that this project will be a succcess as that would make Maris Stella cleaner and thus a more conducive environment to work in.

Week 3 reflection

This week my group has decided that we help the school to reduce the problem of littering in the canteen. We have also decided that we increase the recycling for the school. I have also uploaded questions in the group blog for my group mates to answer. These guiding question can help them think more ideas.

These are my answers for the guiding question.

1) We can help maris stella about the littering problem by putting rubbish bins around the school corridor.

2) We decided that our end product will be different bins for rubbish and designs in the rubbish so that we can attract more students to throw their rubbish in the correct place and not liiter the school.

3) We can tell the students about recycling by putting posters in the corridor and tell them about the facts of recycling, the facts about the earth's global warming. We can also encourage the student by giving some money for a certain number cans recycled. We can also make class visit and tell them about the facts about global warming or we can make some activities for them to participate.

Week 3; Reflection

This week lesson was quite interesting as Ms. Tan helped us very much in our project. She told us about many interesting facts like the recycling machine at the botanical gardens and how we could place it. We found out that the positions of the recycling bin are very important as it affects the number of rubbish we would have collected and would affect the amount of items recycled.

To improve Maris Stella's littering problem, I believe that students would be more aware about it if we publicise about it. We could have posters around the school. If possible, we may even announce about littering problems during assembly and tell students to be aware about the surrounding cleanliness. In this case, littering and rubish would decrease and this would save the effort and time for the school cleaners. (:

I would actually want the end product for the project to be litter-free in school. By which, we have to have posters. I would actually suggest making some recycling bin as it could help recycling problems in our school. In my opinion, our school is deprived of an important stuff, recycling. Recycling could help save the earth and the idea of teaching students about recycling starts when they are young. Although, now, we are not young already. But, I still think that the idea would still work.

Reflection 3

This week my group has decided on which topic we are doing on, we decided to help the school with the litter problem, our teacher Ms Tan told us that the positions of the rubbish bins in school is important and we must also do something to encourage the other pupils in throwing their rubbish into the rubbish bins.

I feels that the placing of the rubbish bins is very important, like we could put rubbish bins near the tk low hall as their is no rubbish bins at all and we could also put some outside the toilets so that when pupils finish using their tissue for business they could throw the wrapper into the bins.

I wanted the end product to be something creative that will attract people to use them. The product must also have different spaces for different rubbish, like one space for plastics and the other for papers something like this.

We could also draw posters to tell others the good points of recycling and keeping the school clean and we could reward any student who throws rubbish inside the bin, like 100 gram of rubbish will be rewarded with 10 cents or something like this to encourage pupils to throw their rubbish into the bins instead of on the floor.

Week 2 Reflection

After the discussion from week 1's lesson, we came to a product, Solar Energy and wanted to research further on it. However, Ms Tan Ching Sing gave us some advice and told us that it would be hard to get materials and if we could get the materials, it would costly.

Therefore, we discussed again and came up with a new topic, Recycling in School. We found out that the school's recycling system is not really well-organised. Therefore, we wish to recycle the thrash that we can find commonly in the rubbish bins around us. We decided that we could make use of them and create wonderful products easily without wasting the natural resources around us.

I feel that the group is finally well co-ordinated now and can work together greatly and come up with a new relevant topic easily, though sometimes with positive arguments regarding the topic.
This project is going to be sticking with us till almost the end of Secondary 2 so I really hope my group can do well and come up with a wonderful product that could amuse everyone.

Week 1 Reflection

On that day, everything was very messy and I didn't really get to understand what we were suppose to do for the lesson. However, after many guidance from our teacher-in-charge, Ms Tan Ching Sing, I finally got to understand the objective of that lesson and the aim of the project. We chose our group leader at the lesson and shared with each other our ideas and thoughts. It was fun and it was an eye-opener as my teammates gave many interesting ideas that I would never have thought of.

Week 2 reflection

We had our second GRACE lesson with Ms Tan Ching Song and we discussed our topic to be how to help Maris Stella's school canteen the problem of littering and recycling. We Marist Earth Warriors know that the school canteen has a very serious problem. Which is why we want to help the school canteen. The end product of our group is still in discussion.

Week 2 Reflection

This week, my group has been discussing on what topic we should do for the GRACE. However, we still have not picked a topic yet. Ms Tan Ching Sing gave us some brief ideas on what we could do on our project, so now we have an idea of what to do.

I feel that there is not enough time to do what was required this lesson as it took time to go to the place and for the teacher to explain the lesson to us and by that time there was only about 10mins to discuss the roles of the group members

Reflection 2

My group has been trying to figure out on what topic we must do for the GRACE and our answers are always very vague. Some of them is vague to the point that we, ourselves does not understand what we are doing. This causes our ideas to go out of point and very messy. When we are out of track our teacher, Ms Tan Ching Sing will give us some brief ideas on what we could do on our project, but of course we cannot use what she had already said but that help us to get on the right track instead of saying wild ideas that will never success. As for now we are still thinking on the topic.

This week my group has decided on the leader, and the group member who is in charge of the blog.We had decided on that Sherwin is the leader and Wei Xuan as the one who is in charge of the blog,when deciding on the roles, we had some quarrel as no one wants to be the leader because we are not confident enough to take care of the group, but in the end we decided on Sherwin as he is the most hardworking one in the group. We decided Wei Xuan as the blogger because he is the only one that knows most about blogging.

I attended my first IPW Grace lesson and found out that our teacher was Ms Tan Ching Sing. She's a very good teacher that gives us advice. I have discussed with my group mates and we agreed the group name to be, Marist Earth Warriors. This is a very important project work and my group will try ton strive for the best. Our project is on how to help Maris Stella about the problem of littering and recycling. We are still discussing about our end product
